To make it official in Australia, here are the essentials:
- You’ll need two witnesses who are at least 18 years old to sign your certificates during the ceremony.
- Both partners must be at least 18 years old (exceptions apply under Section 12 of The Marriage Act 1961).
- Each of you must sign a declaration stating there are no legal reasons preventing the marriage (e.g., a previous marriage without a finalized divorce, or close familial relationships).
- A Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) must be lodged with your celebrant at least one month and no more than 18 months before the big day. Under special circumstances, a “Shortening of Time” can be requested—ask for details.

You can absolutely read your vows! Some couples like to memorise them (vow cards still recommended – just in case), but there’s no pressure. I’ll be there to guide you, and I can even hold your vows for you if needed. The focus is on feeling comfortable and in the moment.
